Training Events

Training for the coming year will include the following:

Return to Studies
Given the success of this course in 2005 reflected in the number applying for the 'BA (Hons) Youth Work' course it is intended to run another such course in the first quarter for volunteers who may be contemplating returning to study, especially at third level.

Management Training
Training for Project Leaders attached to independent projects will start in April of this year. Participants have the option of continuing on post-summer to obtain a third level credit from DkIT.

Practice Teachers
CDYSB in association with DkIT is delivering training to youth workers to wish to act as practice teachers for students on placement from the DkIT course in youth work. A number of these practice teachers have opted to take part in specific training that commenced in February and is accredited by DkIT. Successful participants will obtain a third level credit.

Supervision Skills for Management Committees
A short intensive training course in supervision skills is being piloted upon request, with the management team of a particular project. The course commenced in April. Depending on response to the course and future demand it is something that may be repeated during the year

Induction Training
This is a newly designed induction programmed for new staff employed by CDYSB. It is planned to run over five days.

First Aid
First Aid training for youth workers is an essential skill and CDYSB will continue to organise at least one course for youth workers wishing to obtain or update their certificate.

Basic Youth Leadership Training
CDYSB intends to offer basic leadership training to youth leaders working in the voluntary sector. It is hoped to run one such course per quarter depending on the uptake.

Child Protection Training
Training in Child Protection will continue to be offered on a regional level and will be delivered on request to individual groups provided they can produce sufficient numbers.

Child Protection and Information Technology
New developments in I T brings new benefits for youth work. However, young people's ability to access and use the latest technology unfortunately also brings them closer to those who would wish to abuse them. Training on this topic normally forms part of in-depth child protection training. As part of the ongoing child protection training for CDYSB staff there will be a number of sessions on this topic throughout the year.

Health and Safety.
Awareness of H&S issues in the workplace is vital if management committees and youth workers are to create an environment that is safe and healthy for staff and young people alike.

Supervision Skills (five day course)
In response to demand the five-day training in supervision skills for those with a line management function will take place once again in 2006. Negotiations are taking place with the trainer to decide a date which will most likely take place after the summer.

Crisis Management
When the unforeseen happens in a way that is tragic it can have a profound effect on youth workers and young people alike. It is intended to arrange a course, initially for staff in a line management role that will enable them to respond to a crisis in a manner that is confident, sensitive and reassuring.

Youth Work Practice Issues
As part of an overall organisational initiative on the development of quality standards in youth work the training unit intends to develop a number of clear CDYSB positions on issues fundamental to youth work. This will involve the unit in meeting staff in a process that will involve consultation and focus groups at head office and regional level. More details will follow once the strategy is agreed.
